Our Mission:
To Protect and Improve RI's Pawtuxet River and it's Watershed
We're the Pawtuxet River Authority & Watershed Council. We do things to improve the Pawtuxet River and its extended system of ponds and streams for both preservation of the environment and quality of life in Rhode Island. The Pawtuxet River is the largest river in Rhode Island beginning and ending within the state's boundaries. Its dammed North Branch, the Scituate Reservoir, provides 65% of Rhode Island's drinking water and is the most pristine fresh river water in the state.
The Pawtuxet River is no longer "RI's dirtiest river" or "the sewer of the Pawtuxet Valley". Far from it. Since our creation in 1972, we have cleaned up the Pawtuxet such that it is now a model urban river. We have created a number of public fishing and canoeing accesses throughout the Pawtuxet with more to come. There are no longer industrial discharges into the Pawtuxet. There is trout fishing in every area of the river and anadromous fish from the ocean can now enter its first seven miles. The Pawtuxet System also now boasts the state record for largemouth bass and catfish and holds the largest population of smallmouth bass in the state.
We are a 100% volunteer organization.
