Our Concerns
The PRAWC has many concerns and issues regarding the Pawtuxet River and its watershed.
Some of our main concerns that we are working hard to lay to rest are listed here in no part-
icular order.
- Improving the water quality of the Pawtuxet River. In an historic effort, the PRAWC was
responsible for funds being made available to the three sewage treatment plants on the
Pawtuxet River to upgrade their river discharges to tertiary treatment levels. Discharge water
in this category is nearly drinkable. However, there are still areas in need of improvement
and the PRAWC is spear heading the efforts to execute these initiatives.
- Preserve open space. The PRAWC presently owns two natural riverwalks in Coventry. We
own and are developing, for passive recreation, a 48 acre of land in Cranston. We also
maintain and are further developing a park, river access and field house at Veteran’s
Square in West Warwick. We are planning to provide maintenance to the Roch Riverwalk
in West Warwick also. In Warwick, we are building a canoe launch and parking area in
Pontiac Village. Additionally, we currently own two historic dams on the Pawtuxet River.
- Conduct Clean-ups. The PRAWC is well known in the Pawtuxet Valley for its river clean-ups.
On Earth Day, as well as other times throughout the year, the PRAWC works with volunteers,
community groups, schools, interested individuals and families; In recent years, the PRAWC
has collected hundreds of tons of debris from the river, its banks and ponds, lakes and
streams in its watershed.
- Advocating for the elimination of industrial discharges. We lobby for the elimination of
direct industrial discharges of waste to the river and the application of techniques to im-
prove non-point source discharges such as storm water from paved areas, storm drains
and septic systems.
- Support Greenway Development. The PRAWC has and continues to work with many
groups to establish local and national greenway development, such as the Hope Spur,
the West Warwick Riverwalk, projects of Friends of the Pawtuxet, and the East Coast
Greenway Alliance. Many of these early conceptions are now reality. The PRAWC also
participates vig-orously in programs offered by the RI Trails advisory Committee and
the RI Department of Transportation to create and improve state wide trails.
